IN THE CASE OF: BOARD DATE: 29 May 2008 DOCKET NUMBER: AR20080006929 THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: 1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any). 2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any). THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant requests correction of his military records to show his new social security account number (SSAN). 2. The applicant states that his SSAN was changed due to fraud that was committed on his previous account number. 3. The applicant provides a copy of his a letter from the Social Security Administration dated 10 March 2008. CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE: 1. On 31 March 1998, the applicant enlisted in the Regular Army using an SSAN of 171- ## - ####. He completed his initial training and was awarded military occupational specialty 13B (Cannon Crewmember). He served through two additional enlistments and was discharged due to a family hardship on 14 February 2006. He had attained the rank of sergeant, pay grade E-5, and had completed 7 years, 10 months, and 14 days of creditable active duty service. 2. The available records show that the applicant used the same SSAN throughout his entire military service. 3. On 10 March 2008, the Social Security Administration issued the applicant a new SSAN due to a fraud committed by someone using his original SSAN. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: 1. In this case, the Social Security Administration determined that a fraud had occurred and issued the applicant a new SSAN in March, 2008. 2. Unless there is evidence showing that the applicant may suffer an injustice as a result of maintaining his previous SSAN in his military records, the SSAN should not be changed. The applicant has not provided any such evidence. 3. The Army has an interest in maintaining the accuracy of its records. The data and information contained in those records should reflect the conditions and circumstances that existed at the time the records were created. 4. The applicant is advised that a copy of this decisional document, along with his application and the supporting evidence he provided, confirming his current SSAN will be filed in his Official Military Personnel File. This should serve to clarify any questions or confusion in regard to the difference in his current SSAN and the one recorded in his military record, and satisfy his desire to have his current SSAN documented in his record. 5. In view of the above, the applicant’s request should be denied.
