IN THE CASE OF: BOARD DATE: 26 August 2014 DOCKET NUMBER: AR20140000540 THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: 1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any). 2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any). THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) for the period ending 23 January 2014 to show award of the Air Force Commendation Medal. 2. The applicant states he was informed by the personnel specialist at the demobilization center that this award was not important enough to be added to his DD Form 214 because they had too many Soldiers demobilizing at the time. 3. The applicant provides his DD Form 214 and Special Order P-60-DC, dated 16 December 2013. CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant is currently serving as a first lieutenant in the Washington, District of Columbia Army National Guard (DCARNG). 2. On 9 February 2013, the applicant was ordered to active duty as a member of his DCARNG unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. 3. The applicant deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 12 March 2013 through 6 December 2013. 4. The applicant's record contains Joint Staff Permanent Order Number J-1SO-00239-13, dated 29 October 2013, which shows the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award for exceptionally meritorious service to Joint Task Force - Guantanamo during the period 16 June 2011 to 30 June 2013. The applicant's name appears on the list of individuals authorized this award. 5. The applicant provides Joint Force Headquarters, District of Columbia National Guard, Washington, DC, Special Order P-60-DC, dated 16 December 2013, which shows that by order of the Secretary of the Air Force and with the approval of the Commanding General, District of Columbia National Guard, the applicant was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service for the period of 1 December 2012 to 22 January 2013. 6. The DD Form 214 that he was issued at the time of his REFRAD shows he served in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from 12 March 2013 through 6 December 2013. It does not show award of the Air Force Commendation Medal. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Special orders awarded the applicant the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service; therefore, he is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 to show award of this medal.
