IN THE CASE OF: BOARD DATE: 11 AUGUST 2009 DOCKET NUMBER: AR20090005868 THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: 1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any). 2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any). THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant requests award of a bronze service star to be affixed to his already-awarded Iraq Campaign Medal. 2. The applicant states that he served in Iraq from December 2005 to May 2006 and that the service star for the Iraq Campaign Medal was authorized after his period of service. 3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), dated 2 June 2006. CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE: 1. Having had prior enlisted service in the U.S. Air Force and the Army National Guard, the applicant's records show he was appointed as a Field Artillery second lieutenant in the California Army National Guard and executed an oath of office on 8 August 1996. He was promoted to captain on 12 May 2003. 2. On 10 November 2005, the applicant was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and subsequently served in Kuwait/Iraq from 17 December 2005 to 5 may 2006. He was honorably released from active duty to the control of his ARNG unit on 2 June 2006. 3. Item 13 (Decorations, Medals, Badges, Citations and Campaign Ribbons Awarded or Authorized) of the applicant's DD Form 214 shows he was awarded, among other awards, the Iraq Campaign Medal. 4. Department of Defense Directive, dated 16 April 2008, designated four phases of Operation Iraqi Freedom as qualifying for a campaign star: Liberation of Iraq from 19 March 2003 to 1 May 2003, Transition of Iraq from 2 May 2003 to 28 June 2004, Iraqi Governance from 29 June 2004 to 15 December 2005, and National Resolution from 16 December 2005 to a date to be determined. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: 1. The applicant contends that he should be awarded a bronze service star with his Iraq Campaign Medal. 2. The evidence of record shows the applicant served in Kuwait/Iraq from 17 December 2005 to 5 May 2006 and was awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal. Furthermore, the applicant participated in the National Resolution campaign during his service in Iraq. He is, therefore, entitled to award of a bronze service stars to be affixed to the Iraq Campaign Medal.
