IN THE CASE OF: BOARD DATE: 10 February 2015 DOCKET NUMBER: AR20140009289 THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: 1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any). 2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any). THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant requests correction of his record to show the correct dates of his deployment to Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. 2. The applicant states he was deployed to Afghanistan from 16 August 2010 through 15 August 2011 and to Kazakhstan from 2 September 2012 to 23 September 2012. He needs the corrections to obtain employment overseas. 3. The applicant provides copies of two Soldier Deployment History Out Processing Reports, 101st Airborne Division temporary change of station (TCS) orders, and a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal award certificate. CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant served on active duty in the Regular Army from 25 February 2009 through 9 April 2014. 2. 101st Airborne Division temporary change of station (TCS) orders, dated 28 June 2010, directed the applicant deploy to Afghanistan for a period not to exceed 365 days commencing on 16 August 2010. 3. The applicant was awarded the NATO Medal for the period 16 August 2010 through 15 August 2011. 4. A 6 March 2014 Deployment History Out Processing Report shows two deployment entries of 16 August 2010 – 15 August 2011 (Afghanistan) and 2 September 2012 – 23 September 2012 (Kazakhstan). 5. His 9 April 2014 DD Form 214 shows, at block 18 (Remarks), "SERVICE IN AFGHANISTAN 20110418 – 20110801." 6. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) shows receipt of hostile fire/imminent danger pay from 15 August 2010 – 26 July 2011 in Kuwait. 7. Army Regulation 635-8 (Separation Processing and Documents) states a DD Form 214 is a synopsis of the Soldier's most recent period of continuous active duty service. It states for item 18, for an active duty Soldier deployed to a foreign country with his or her unit during their continuous period of active service, enter the statement, "SERVICE IN (NAME OF COUNTRY DEPLOYED) FROM (inclusive dates for example, YYYYMMDD - YYYYMMDD)." DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: 1. The dates of the applicant's deployment to Afghanistan differ significantly depending on the document reviewed. 2. The preponderance of evidence shows his deployment to Afghanistan should be shown as 16 August 2010 to 15 August 2011. Therefore, it would be appropriate to correct his DD Form 214 to reflect these dates. 3. The applicant's deployment history was not updated until shortly before he separated. Because of this it appears his deployment to Kazakhstan was not included on his DD Form 214. Therefore, it would be appropriate to correct this oversight by including the entry "SERVICE IN KAZAKHSTAN 20120902 – 20120923." As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by: a. deleting, at block 18 on his DD Form 214, the entry "SERVICE IN AFGHANISTAN 20110418 – 20110801"; and b. adding, at block 18 on his DD Form 214, the entries "SERVICE IN AFGHANISTAN 20100816 – 20110815" and "SERVICE IN KAZAKHSTAN 20120902 – 20120923." _______ _ x_______ ___ CHAIRPERSON I certify that herein is recorded the true and complete record of the proceedings of the Army Board for Correction of Military Records in this case.
